Got questions? We've got answers.
What is WiFi, and how is it different from my internet connection?
Your internet connection is the fiber service that brings speed into your home. WiFi is the wireless signal that delivers that connection to your devices throughout your space via your WiFi router.
What does a WiFi router do?
A router creates your home WiFi network and sends the internet connection to your devices. Router quality, placement, and age all affect WiFi performance.
What is mesh WiFi, and when is it helpful?
Mesh WiFi uses multiple access points that work together to spread WiFi evenly throughout your home. It’s especially helpful for larger homes, multi-level layouts, or spaces with WiFi dead zones.
What’s the difference between WiFi and a wired (Ethernet) connection?
A wired connection uses an Ethernet cable to connect directly to your router or modem. Wired connections are typically the most stable and fastest option, while WiFi offers convenience and mobility without having to run wires.
Why does WiFi performance vary from room to room?
Distance, walls, building materials, and the number of connected devices all impact WiFi strength. Even furniture and appliances can affect signal quality.
What is WiFi6?
WiFi6 is the latest WiFi standard, designed to handle more devices at once with better speed, reliability, and security—ideal for today’s connected homes.
What is NextLight Whole Home WiFi?
It’s a fully supported WiFi solution managed by NextLight, including professional WiFi6 equipment, setup, security updates, and ongoing support from our local team.
What’s included with Whole Home WiFi?
Whole Home WiFi includes a WiFi6 router, free installation and setup, automatic updates, access to the NextLight WiFi App, enhanced security, and support from our local technicians. Additionally, if your WiFi equipment becomes defected, we will replace it for free.
What can I do with the NextLight WiFi App?
The app lets you:
- View and manage connected devices
- Create guest networks
- Set parental and network controls
- Prioritize devices or activities
- Run speed tests and reboot WiFi
- Monitor security and network activity
All from your phone, anytime.
How does installation and setup work?
Our technicians can handle setup at no extra cost, or you can choose self-install if you prefer. We’ll make sure everything is configured properly.
What if my WiFi doesn’t reach my whole home?
If coverage is limited, we’ll help recommend mesh extenders to ensure strong, reliable WiFi throughout your home.
What happens if my WiFi equipment needs service or replacement?
We’ve got you covered. Equipment support and replacement are included, and our local team is always available to help.
Can I use my own WiFi router with NextLight?
Yes. You’re welcome to use your own router with NextLight’s fiber internet service.
What does NextLight support if I bring my own router?
Our team can confirm that your NextLight internet connection is online and working properly (including the fiber connection and ONT). However, setup, configuration, and troubleshooting of customer-owned routers are not supported. Customer Owned Router Policy (PDF)
Why can’t NextLight support customer-owned routers?
Every router brand and model works differently. To ensure consistent, reliable service—and fair support for all customers—NextLight technicians are unable to provide setup, configuration, or ongoing support for customer-owned equipment. Many 3rd party WiFi equipment brands offer customer support for an additional cost that is charged annually.
What am I responsible for if I bring my own router?
You’ll manage equipment purchase, setup, security updates, WiFi performance, coverage issues, and manufacturer support. Many 3rd party brands offer security and parental control features at an additional cost that is charged monthly.
What if I experience WiFi issues?
If your internet connection is working but WiFi performance is limited, the issue is typically related to router settings, placement, or equipment capabilities.
Can I switch to NextLight Whole Home WiFi later?
Yes. You can add NextLight Whole Home WiFi at any time if you’d like a fully supported option.
